34th International Mining Games Competition
The Camborne School of Mines is honored to be able to host the 34th International mining games competition in 2012. This is the first time that the competition has been held in the UK and we are looking forward to the challenges of organizing a mining competition in an area where there has been no operating mine for over 10 years. The competition days will be held at our old test mine; the King Edward Mine. The mine was used by the school since 1897 producing tin for the school until CSM moved to the current Holmans test mine. The competition will run between the 29th of March and the 1st of April.
Schedule
Thursday 29th March
Friday 30th March
Saturday 31st March
Sunday 1st April
HistoryThe competition was started in 1978 in honour of the 91 Miners that died in the Sunshine Mine Disaster, USA in 1972, as well as miners that have since died in the line of duty. CSM joined the competition in 2006 and it was agreed that we would hold the event in 2012, due to it also being the year the country is to hold the Olympic Games.
The primary aim of the competition is to keep the “old-fashioned” mining techniques alive, many of which were developed in Cornwall. The competition has now evolved and also provides a talent scouting opportunity for many large mining companies as well as enhancing the comradeship of mining students over international borders.
The Events
The games are extremely competitive with teams entered from mining schools in Australia, America and Canada. There are separate men’s, women’s and mixed competitions. An Alumni competition also runs alongside the event. Each team consists of 6 members however one person from each team is required to sit out of each event. Last year’s competition was held in Reno, Nevada where CSM entered a men’s team, eventually placed 17th overall.
